Mrs. Neale’s 5 classroom had a great opportunity to participate in the Roots of Empathy program. Once every 3 weeks Baby Finn and mom Mellissa O”Brien visit the classroom to teach children about feelings and the feelings of others.
This evidence- based program has shown significant effect in reducing levels of aggression - including bullying- among primary and elementary school children. By raising social/emotional competence and being able to understand how others are feeling, we are planting the seeds of Empathy in these lucky students!
A trained Roots of Empathy instructor coaches the children in observing and reading cues the baby gives as to how the baby is feeling. Students observe baby’s development and learn to label baby’s feelings and intentions. Through experiential learning the Instructor helps children identify and reflect on their own feelings and the feelings of others. Visits by the instructor before and after each family visit prepare and reinforce teachings using a specialized lesson plan for each visit.
This program is funded by grants and donations received each year. We would like to thank: Wheatland FCSS, The United Way, Strathmore FCSS, and W. Brett Wilson for their generous support.
Thank you Mrs. Neale for allowing us to come into your classroom and share this wonderful program!
If you would participate as a family or an instructor please let the office know or contact Leah 403-934-5058.
